The rumor mill heated up a bit yesterday, which is great, as we all perch on the edge (some might say the “ledge”) of our seats, awaiting the latest this summer.

And I think that last bit is at least in part makes certain "rumors" sort of go viral and a bit out of control relative to their grounding in reality.

So in that spirit, this blog is both an update and a bit of a "research-based" commentary. When I encounter a rumor out in the blogosphere that I've never heard for any of my sources, especially like the "TJ Oshie to Chicago" story (that was likely entirely false from the very beginning), I will do some digging of my own to see if they have any veracity.

And sometimes, I will double check my own rumors, as I did here.

So, without further ado:

KARL ALZNER

This is a rumor I heard for the first time last night—not from one of my sources but from Brian Foran of Sports Mockery—that the Hawks might acquire the Caps defenseman.

I checked it out with a source this AM. It’s legit. Not terribly likely to happen, but a legit interest of the team.

I also heard the name of another young defenseman with another Central Division club the team has their eye on. More on that, possibly, to come.

Another name the Hawks, I'm told have some interest in: Michael Del Zotto.

JAMES NEAL

Not happening. Vegas intends to hold on to him.

EVANDER KANE

Could happen, but salary and cap issues are the hold up here. The disposition of the Marian Hossa LTIR situation may come into play here as well.

AA AND KRUGER

It’s sounding more and more from one source in particular that the “done deal” of Kruger to the Vegas Golden Knights has become “undone.” I do hear otherwise from other sources.

Not sure on this. The “prevailing wisdom” here seems to be the deal is done but both teams are waiting for the Hawks to pay a roster bonus sometime around 6/30-7/1.

I’m also not going to pretend to know with certainty how this works re: the CBA, but common sense tells me the Hawks ought to be able to “pay that bonus” a variety of ways, including just agreeing to retain salary. Capologists might be able to clarify. Please do so on the thread.

Point is, I’m personally not sure if the roster bonus theory is legit either. We should know one way or the other by Sunday.

As for Anisimov, I still continue to hear he is in play.

More as I hear it.
