Posts, gloves, and another ugly win

Yet again last night, the Blackhawks racked up two points, and in so doing, failed to ease the doubts that some have about how good they really are.

Up to about 8 minutes left in regulation, the game, against an injury depleted Nashville team (minus PK Subban, James Neal and Colin Wilson), was tied and close, about even in shots and quality chances, with goalies at both ends playing lights out.

What tilted the contest to Chicago was a close call on a controversial Ryan Hartman goal, then two late empty netters for the rookie, giving him his first—and pretty unusual—NHL hat trick.

Hartman's first goal appeared to have gone in off either his glove or that of a Nashville defender, while (or just before) the goal became dislodged. The goal was reviewed and upheld—a very tough one to call but not enough to overturn.

Meanwhile, the Predators hit at least 4 goalposts (or the crossbar) including 2 late in regulation.

The fact is, you just don't win so many games like these unless you're a good team. The Hawks have some assets and tendencies that are delivering on a regular basis—not least of which is Artemi Panarin's absolutely lethal one-timer, which resulted in yet another goal last night.

The Hawks killed off all three Nashville power plays, as their overall penalty kill rank continues to slowly improve after an abysmal start to the season.

Their lower lines played well against admittedly patchwork Nashville units (Jordin Tootoo, Dennis Rasmussen, Andrew Desjardins and Richard Panik were all at least even or in positive possession territory).

They also (somewhat uncharacteristically for this year anyway) outshot the Preds, 31-27.

But this wasn't just the third straight win for the Hawks, it was the third straight game they should win. And, to their credit, they did. None spectacularly or convincingly. But enough to rack up the points and continue to work on things—like the improving penalty kill, a sputtering power play, 5-on-5 line and pairing chemistry.

Another such game looms Tuesday, when the under .500 Detroit Red wings come to the UC. I'll have a preview.
