A LITTLE MORE ON LEDDY
Another team involved in the Nick Leddy discussions was Florida. I also heard the Hawks might not be done dealing either—other transactions were discussed beyond those involving Leddy.
Trades are brewing all over the league and the Hawks need to lose one player off the NHL roster.
SALAD DAYS
As the blogosphere ripples with varying degrees of shock and mockery over the Hawks signing Dan Carcillo, I would urge this: keep an open mind.
My only huge beef with Carcillo is his propensity for taking the odd, incredibly dumb penalty at a bad time. Let’s bear in mind, this was a problem with the guy (Brandon Bollig) Carcillo is ostensibly replacing on the roster.
Anyone saying “how about he’s a horrible hockey player,” needs to stop pining for a roster full of 168 pound, would-be top six players.
There are things Carcillo does that are not bad things to add to the Hawk roster: he finishes checks, stands up for teammates, and can actually play with more skilled linemates. It really remains to be seen if the other candidate for “the job,” Brandon Mashinter, can do all those things as well. Or if he’s just another 2 minute every other night dinosaur in the John Scott mold.
MUSICAL CHAIRS
The Hawk roster currently features 8 defensemen, one belief being that one of Trevor van Riemsdyk, Kyle Cumiskey or David Rundblad has to go to Rockford. A source told me over the weekend that The former two are favorites of Joel Quenneville, and the latter of Stan Bowman. Might be a little squabble over that—and I would not rule out Mashinter going to the Rock or some other unforeseen move.
