The timing of this whole "trade Huet/re-sign Khabibulin" drama (if, in fact, there's really anything to it beyond blogger speculation), seems a bit odd and impractical to me.
Are the Hawks really that much worse with
Cristobal Huet as the #1 'tender next year . . . or with
Martin Havlat playing in Los Angeles or Montreal?
Sure, it's
possible now, 2 hours and 35 minutes before free agency kicks off, that Tallon could deal Huet, re-sign Khabibulin and re-sign Havlat.
Possible, but not bloody likely.
Meanwhile, the clock is ticking, Havlat's teammates are texting like crazy to get him re-signed and most Hawk fans are still hoping a deal will get done with Havlat.
Let's also bear in mind that the impetus for this Khabibulin rumor was a blog written yesterday by Josh Mora of Comcast SportsNet Chicago, posted on their website.
EDIT: It appears I might have gotten something wrong with regard to Josh Mora/Comcast's relationship with the Hawks. And I might have taken an unfair swipe at Josh. Trying to get all the facts. And when I do, I will share with all of you.
If, in fact, the Hawks are dilly-dallying with a Huet trade and a Khabibulin re-signing, have they given up on Havlat? Is this "rumor" something else? A diversion? An attempt to light a fire under Havlat?
When you've got 24-48 hours to get a deal done with Havlat, why embark on a complicated attempt to trade a big salary elsewhere and re-sign another big salary player?
Just asking the question now, should things not work out well over the next 24-48 hours.
