The Tampa Bay Lightning opened up their preseason schedule with a 2-1 loss on home ice to the Carolina Hurricanes.

Carolina's special teams capitalized on their opportunities, potting two goals on the power play. Both newcomer, Justin Williams, and Teuvo Teravainen lit the lamp with a man-advantage.

The Lightning's lone goal belonged to Adam Erne as he scored on the power play as well. Erne's goal was a welcoming site as many believe he could crack the Tampa Bay roster.

Michael Leighton started in goal for the Bolts and made 20 saves.

Similar to most other preseason games, the Lightning and Hurricanes witnessed an increase in the amount of slashing penalties called. This is a reality all teams are going to have to get used to as the league is committed to cracking down on these offenses. Tampa Bay must use the six preseason games that remain to adjust their game so they stay out of the penalty box.

The Lightning take on the Hurricanes again tonight, this time on the road.

On another note, news came out yesterday that former Lightning forward, Brian Boyle was diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukemia. I know that I speak for everyone when I say that our thoughts and prayers go out to Brian and his family.
