If you want to be considered a true Stanley Cup contender, you have to be able to take out the defending champions. On Thursday night, the Tampa Bay Lightning were able to do just that as they defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins 5-4 at AMALIE Arena.

To say that this game was fun to watch would be a complete understatement. There was everything a hockey fan wants to see in this contest. From large quantities of goal scoring to sick saves, this installment of Bolts vs. Penguins truly had it all.

Slater Koekkoek started off the scoring for the Lightning with his first career NHL goal. To the surprise of everyone, including himself, he would not be finished for the night. Koekkoek would score the final goal of the night for the Bolts, making their lead impossible to wipe away.

At the end of the first period, Victor Hedman had himself an NBA-style buzzer beater. The defenseman found the back of the net with 0.1 seconds left on the clock to give his team a 2-1 lead going into the first intermission.

When the second period got underway, Bolts fans got to witness their captain make a statement. After almost a full year, Steven Stamkos scored a goal 3:49 into the middle period. There was nothing more important than that first goal of the season for Stamkos as he attempts to get himself back into form.

In a 5-4 victory, there are usually a few good candidates for "Player of the Game". Surprisingly enough, there is no argument about who deserves this honor and he did not even record a goal himself. Alex Killorn provided his team with four points, all assists, last night and is hands-down the games first star. It is nice to see Killorn off to a good start after a not so memorable 2016-17 campaign.

The Tampa Bay Lightning have to feel good about their victory over the defending champions and they are now tied for first place in the Atlantic Division with the Maple Leafs and Red Wings. They will look to keep things rolling on Saturday night when they host the St. Louis Blues.
