Subban & Galchenyuk left off Team Canada and Team North America

The remaining rosters of the World Cup of Hockey teams were announced on Friday and perhaps the biggest surprise for Habs fans is that Alexei Emelin was the only Canadiens player to be added to any of the teams, joining Team Russia.

While some may say that omitting P.K. Subban from Team Canada was the biggest snub, I would argue that leaving Alex Galchenyuk off of Team North America’s team was actually a greater shock. Brent Burns deserved to be named, he had a better season than Subban this year. If you are not watching the San Jose Sharks and Burns in the playoffs, you are missing out. Nor did Jake Muzzin take away a spot from Subban, Canada needed another left handed defenseman. As a Canadian and Canadiens fan, I would have loved to see Subban on the team but I understand the reasoning for leaving him off of it.

Galchenyuk not making Team NA was a true surprise, especially after the way he finished the season. 30 goals are hard to come by in the NHL and one would have thought that Team NA could use an established NHL player. Galchenyuk would have been especially useful with his ability to play center or wing. Instead, Jonathan Drouin and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins were picked ahead of him. I believe Auston Matthews always had a spot on Team NA.

I'll be back with more thoughts on this later and true player comparisons…

Cheers & follow along!
