The top 12 name suggestions for the Montreal Canadiens new AHL affiliate in Laval have been announced and now fans can vote to further narrow down the possibilities. Unfortunately, the contest is only open to residents of Quebec. This likely has to do with Loto Quebec rules and regulations but it is somewhat contrary to the recent focus by the club of Canadiens fans across the world...

Of the top 12, my top three in no particular order are:

Laval Rapid - Sounds okay in English and French. Geographically it works as Laval is has rapids and the Place Bell happens to be in the municipality of Laval-des-Rapides. Not necessarily my favorite but certainly better than the A’s or Alpha’s.

Laval Rocket - Pro: Honours the late great Canadiens Maurice “Rocket” Richard. Con: There is no actual connection between Laval and Richard. There already was a failed QMJHL named the Montreal Rocket from 1999-2003. Richard was a winner. If the team falters and continues to miss out on the playoffs, does it really service his name and memory?

Laval Titan - Named after the QMJHL team that played from 1971 until 1998. Works well in English and French. Nicely ties Laval’s past history with hockey to the present day.

Which one is your top choice?

In other news, former Canadiens player Ryan O’Byrne announced his retirement. Drafted by the club in the 3rd round of 2003, O’Byrne was with the organization until the 2010-2011 season when he was traded to the Colorado Avalanche in return for Michael Bournival. He will be going back to Cornell to complete his university degree, an admirable decision.

Finally, Jeff Petry’s wife Julie is organizing a group women from across the NHL (including Angela Price and Katia Pacioretty) to run the Montreal Marathon this September to benefit the Montreal Canadiens Children’s Foundation and their own, the JP Foundation that raises money for underprivileged children.
