Reports say Shattenkirk nixed another trade deal

There are various reports tonight that Kevin Shattenkirk killed a trade to the Tampa Bay Lightning by not electing to negotiate a contract extension. This is the second time this season his refusal to negotiate an extension killed a potential trade (third if you believe some reports). Months ago his refusal to negotiate with Edmonton reportedly killed a trade for Taylor Hall.

The reports tonight suggest that Shattenkirk turned down a seven year, $42 million extension. I bet people will speculate a lot regarding who the Lightning were sending back to the Blues. Many will think it was Ben Bishop but my guess would be Tyler Johnson.

All along, Shattenkirk's camp has said that he wants to test unrestricted free agency this summer and they certainly appear to be sticking to their guns on it. Some may get angry at Shattenkirk for turning down a very lucrative contract and thus ending the potential trade. I may get frustrated with it but I won't get angry. He's earned his right to test unrestricted free agency.

Unfortunately for the Blues, the more this happens, the more his trade value declines, putting his squarely as only a rental player.
