Jonathan Quick Injured in Loss to Sabres

As if a game where the Kings outshot their opponent 17 to 43 and lost wasn't frustrating enough, they also might have lost Conn Smythe winning goaltender Jonathan Quick.

Quick left the game with about a minute and a half left in the overtime period of a 2-2 game at First Niagara Center between the Kings and the Sabres. Quick looked in some decent discomfort after having to make a point blank save from the slot where he had to extend his left leg rather quickly to make the stop. After the save Quick remained on the ice for several moments as the play turned up ice. Once a stoppage of play happened Quick, with the aide of a trainer, stretched several times before heading off the ice and immediately into the dressing room. Hopefully the hook was just precautionary, but Quick did seem to be in pain as he was leaving.

From the looks of it Quick may have tweaked either a hip or a groin. Neither injury is one that a goaltender ever wants to experience, and hopefully it's nothing more than a minor strain.

Scrivens entered net for the Kings and was put in a tremendously difficult spot having to go cold into a shootout. Interestingly enough though, if Scrivens had won the game he would have been the goaltender of record on the win having not made a save in regulation. Alas, it was not meant to be. Ennis and Moulson scored while the Kings Mike Richards and Trevor Lewis (Yes, Trevor Lewis) were stopped.

Meanwhile, the Buffalo Sabres and Ryan Miller made advanced statisticians everywhere cry as they were outshot 30 to 7 after two periods but still held the lead 2-1. It makes sense though. As soon as Fox Sports West and Jim Fox start talking about corsi as a semi relevant stat they play a game that is the complete antithesis to it. Dwight King's late equalizer, which was his fifth of the season, off the stick of Tyler Toffoli salvaged a point for the Kings. The assist to Toffoli extends his points streak to four games, and Mike Richards who had the secondary assist extended his to five. Toffoli now has six points in four games since his call up.

Miller put in a killer 45-save performance for Buffalo and Cody Hodgson scored twice for the Sabres who won their first game of the season on home ice.

Back to Quick though. Hopefully this is a minor injury for the Kings goaltender. Despite a bit of a rocky start this year Quick has righted the ship in recent games and looked to be getting into better form. More details are certain to leak out on the severity of the injury. If it's something long term, the Kings and Team USA will have to find an answer in net somewhere else.

Meanwhile down in Manchester, Kings' top goaltending prospect Martin Jones is off to a fine start. He has a 9-2-2- record through 13 games, and holds .927 save percentage and 2.24 goals against. No doubt Jones would get the call up in a situation where Quick is out for an extended period of time and Scrivens in need of a backup.

The Kings have an upcoming back to back against the Islanders and New Jersey Thursday and Friday, and that could quickly spell the first NHL start for the 23-year-old Jones if he is called up. The 6-foot-4 netminder was a free agent pick up by the organization back in 2010. As of this morning,

Also hearing Quick has been sent back to Los Angeles for a medical evaluation.

Tanner Pearson will also join the team as Matt Greene is moved to LTIR

I'll update with more details as they flow out in terms of Jonathan Quick's injury. Also follow me on twitter for news and notes about the Kings and the NHL.
