Will The Ottawa Senators Be Active on Deadline Day?

All eyes today will be on the General Managers around the league as the Buyers and Sellers try to come to terms with their counterparts to make their teams better now or for the future, or to get something back for expiring contracts that they aren't going to extend for the future.

So, what will Ottawa Senators' GM Bryan Murray do today? Ottawa is in the tricky situation where they have been out of the playoff race for the better part of a couple of months, now find themselves within spitting distance of the Bruins thanks to the current 5 game winning streak.

Two weeks ago, Ottawa would be in the firm category of seller, but now, will Murray pull something out of his hat to add and push the Senators closer? He tried it last season, when the Senators were 4 points out with 4 teams to jump on March 5th and added Ales Hemsky. The deal didn't pan out, but that wasn't due to the play of Hemsky, who was pretty good in his short tenure as a Senator. Today the Sens find themselves 7 points back on the heels of the 5 game streak.

One expiring contract (Erik Condra) is playing the best hockey of his career and if anyone has been watching him play he could definitely help any team's bottom 6 forwards at a cheap salary. Colin Greening is availaible and the Senators would add their own bag of pucks to the deal for any team picking up his salary. If a suitor could be found for veteran David Legwand I think he could be had as well, freeing up playing time for the future youngsters in the system and allowing both Curtis Lazar and Jean-Gabriel Pageau the opportunity to play centre night in and night out.

All in all, I don't think Murray will be in the market to add a rental, but if there is something out there that makes sense in the long run, he won't hesitate to pull the trigger. Those deals tend to come leading up to the draft, so it will likely be a pretty quiet day. But that is when Murray tends to surprise....we will see between now and 3:00 PM.
