The #12 Pick - Trade Up, Trade Down, Trade Out or Keep It?

With no draft lottery luck this past Saturday, the Ottawa Senators hold the #12 pick in next month's NHL Entry Draft.

Pierre Dorion will face a lot of expectation to make the right move with respect to the pick, his first as the team's GM. There will be opportunity to get a good player with that pick in a relatively deep draft, but there will also be temptation to trade the pick and there are a variety of options available to him.

There is always the option to move up, but just how far is the question. Moving into the top 5 would be very costly, probably cost prohibitive as the assets required to get a premiere player would likely be too great.

Moving up 4 or 5 spots might be viable, but unless there is a player in that range that they really like and are sure that he isn't going to fall to 12 then they are better off keeping the pick.

They could also trade down a few spots, again that would depend on who they have their eye on and if they think he would still be available at a certain spot, and if they can add another pick or two that might be the way to go.

Finally, they could trade out of the first round all together, by trading the pick as part of a package to bring in a marquee asset that will fill an immediate hole on the roster. I am not going to suggest who that might be or what it might cost in addition to the pick, but I am sure there is a deal out there with a team who has a player under contract but can't fit him in their salary structure for next season.

Where the Sens are scheduled to pick is about the area where it could be any of 10 players, because after the top 8 or so it spreads out and it will be personal preference and all draft boards will look very different.

Trading wouldn't be the worst thing that ever happened, but if they do trade down or out, they had better make sure that their decision is the right one, for the long and short term needs of the franchise.
