Sens Dip Back To Switzerland, Sign Tom Pyatt As A Depth Move

The Senators went to Switzerland to hire their new Head and Associate coaches, and there is little doubt that Guy Boucher and Marc Crawford had some input into the Senators signing of Tom Pyatt yesterday.

Pyatt spent the last 2 seasons in Switzerland, notching 63 points in 92 games. He has 254 games of NHL experience over 5 seasons, with the Habs and Lightning before he left for Europe.

It is a 1-year, 2-way contract with a pretty healthy AHL salary of $200K and an NHL salary of $800K.

Obviously this is a move to shore up some depth, add experience to the AHL roster and maybe fill in on the bottom 6 in Ottawa if needed. Ottawa has a number of those types of players already, and he won't be a factor in the search for top 6 depth, moves that will come closer to the end of June, beginning of July.

But, in these dog days of the early off-season, I guess it counts as news, as insignificant as it is, as we wait for the draft and free agency to see if anything bigger transpires.

I guess Crawford and/or Boucher saw something in his play that made them think he could contribute something to the organization, especially given the large AHL ticket and the fact that there probably wasn't an extended lineup for his services.

Time will tell.
