Mark Stone scored in the fifth round of the shootout to give the Ottawa Senators their first win in three outings on the young season, a 3-2 victory over the Vancouver Canucks.

Cody Ceci and Ryan Dzingel scored in regulation for Ottawa, while Kyle Turris scored on the Senators' third and final penalty shot attempt to extend the game to extra shooters allowing Stone's winner.

The Senators have gone to a shootout every game so far, falling short in the first two but finally getting on the board leaving the Sabres as the lone Eastern Conference team without a win.

Ceci's goal opened the scoring and was a bit of a gift, as the shot went right through Jacob Markstrom and barely trickled across the line. Vancouver took the lead on a couple of screen shots, first by Chris Tanev and then Tomas Vanek, neither of which Craig Anderson saw coming. Dzingel's goal was the nicest of the night, moreso for the pass from Bobby Ryan to find his opposite winger wide open 3/4 of the way across the ice.

The Senators remained perfectly imperfect on special teams, with the upside being the penalty kill is at 100%, while the downside being the power play is still 0-for the season (0-16).

The Senators did go with 7 defensemen, with callups Thomas Chabot and Christian Jaros combining to eat up just over 20 minutes in their season and NHL debuts respectively. Despite the power play struggles, Chabot was still the third option with the man advantage behind Dion Phaneuf and Chris Wideman.

Alex Burrows got a standing ovation in the first TV timeout, an acknowledgement from the fans and teammates he had played for for 11 seasons before last spring's trade to the Senators. Moments before the tribute, Burrows had put Troy Stetcher through the open gate at the Senators bench in what could have turned out to be dangerous (although I don't think he knew the gate was open and was apologetic right away, making sure his former teammate was ok), and then right after it could have been poetic justice but his point-blank attempt was robbed by Markstrom.

Still, while it hasn't been pretty, they are now three games in without Erik Karlsson and the Senators have 4 of a possible 6 points as they try to tread water until the captain can return and bring some order to what is at times a chaotic looking game.

The team has a couple of days off before the tough back to back in Alberta, Friday in Calgary and Saturday in Edmonton.
