Miss a little, miss a...little

Well I am back after a few days away, and sure enough, there wasn't much of significance from the Ottawa Senators.

Today is the fourth day of free agency, and the only signing for the NHL roster was Nate Thompson, a fourth line centre who is an upgrade on Chris Kelly, who occupied the role for most of last season, but wasn't a factor in the playoffs.

While there have been some big, regretful contracts signed during the first three days of silly season, there were some bargains that will turn out to be good value signings. Maybe those players would have been available to the Senators, and maybe not, but the likes of Scott Hartnell (1 yr, $1M) or Kyle Quincey (1 yr, $1.25M) would have been nice stop-gaps and insurance at an affordable price until the franchise was sure that the prospects are ready.

There are still some names that would fit the bill, and I wouldn't hesitate to call up Jaromir Jagr and offer him a two year deal at $2M per, because he might not be fleet of foot at age 45, but you still can't take the puck off him and he scored more points than his age last season.

Bigger than any signing, or lack thereof, was the news that Daniel Alfredsson was leaving the organization. There are a number of ways to look at that news, the good side would be that he simply wanted to take some time away from the game and focus on family time.

On the other hand, the pessimist might say that he got a full look at the inner workings of the organization and didn't like or agree with what he saw. Having gone through what he did as a player (including the way his departure to Detroit went down), maybe a couple of years in the front office he just didn't want to be a part of it any more.
