Mini Senators win rookie tournament with SO win over Leafs

The Ottawa Senators fell behind 3-0, but used a strong third period to claw back and down the Leafs in a shootout to finish the rookie tournament with a 2-0 record.

And, the Senators did it without both Thomas Chabot and Colin White, who were held out of this game (presumably not to embarrass the host Leafs, who have most of their top level prospects already playing in the NHL (Matthews, Nylander, Marner etc)). Of course I am kidding, but still, keeping them out is a curious move at a point in time where any action is good for their respective developments.

Andreas Englund, Matteo Gennaro and Filip Chlapik scored in the final frame, answering Toronto's 3 goal in the first 9:40 outburst in the opening period against Kevin Bailie, a late addition to the roster, who was signed to an ATO after Jordan Hollett came up ill. Marcus Hogberg played the second half and stopped all 13 shots he faced in normal action and all 6 in the shootout for the win.

Defenseman Maxime Lajoie scored the shootout winner for the Senators.

Many of the prospects will get the invite to the main camp which finally gets underway later this week, signalling the end of summer and the start of getting down do business.

The Senators play their first (of just 6) pre-season game a week from tonight, Sept 18th when they host Toronto.
