Impressions of Jonathan Dahlen

Jonathan Dahlen was an interesting name when the Senators drafted him in the second round of June's NHL entry draft, but other than being the son of longtime NHLer Ulf Dahlen, Senators fans really didn't have much, if any, firsthand knowledge of the player.

Well, after viewing him play at last weekend's Summer Showcase tournament, the Senators might have themselves a player. I will admit that I didn't watch every minute of the tournament, but every time I tuned in to a Team Sweden game, Dahlen seemed to be doing something positive for his club.

He seems to play the stereotypical game for a Swedish forward, someone who can pay attention in his own end but still has an offensive upside and knows how to play with and without the puck.

He showed some ability to drive the net, which resulted in a highlight reel goal (admittedly more for the pass that he received than his shot, but he was certainly in the right lane).

At 18, he is obviously a guy who needs a couple of years of seasoning, probably at least a year in Sweden and then a year in the AHL, but at some point he should play in the NHL.

As the Senators remain on the lookout for that true top end prospect, they will have to settle with amassing a group of decent to good ones, and Dahlen certainly seems to fit that mold.
