Breaking: Head Coach Dave Cameron Fired By Senators

Pierre Dorion wasted little time in cleaning house.

While not unexpected, Dave Cameron, Andre Tourigny and Rick Wamsley were all given their walking papers and Jason Smith was offered another position in the organization.

So the changes that Eugene Melnyk promised are happening. How deep it goes in terms of roster changes are still to be determined.

So as other coaches get fired, they will be added to the list of potential candidates, and it will be interesting to see if the franchise finally goes for a coach with some pedigree, or if they continue to take their chances with an inexperienced (at the NHL level) head coach like they have done since Bryan Murray (Craig Hartsburg and John Paddock did have some NHL experience but neither could be considered overly successful).

While coaching isn't the sole reason the Senators missed the playoffs, having both special teams units in the bottom 5 of the league played a big part in that. Those are both coachable parts of the game where a system can be built to suit the assets available.

Ditto the defensive zone coverage.

And while a vast majority of people have given a pass to Craig Anderson this season, I don't think he was good enough either (more on that in coming days).

Scoring is something that a team does or doesn't have sometimes, but that wasn't the Senators problem.

Dorion will meet with the media early this afternoon, where he will outline his reasons for the sweeping changes and maybe a timeline for putting a new staff in place. Hopefully it won't happen quickly and he can avoid the biggest issue that may tarnish the Bryan Murray legacy- inability to find the proper coach to guide the roster he puts together.
