New York returns to action for their second of six pre-season games Wednesday against New Jersey. The Rangers defeated the Islanders 1-0 in overtime Monday on Neal Pionk's goal. New York is on the road the next two games after tonight, facing the Islanders again on Friday and Devils on Saturday. Look for the roster to be cut from its current 49 either after Wednesday's game or possibly before Friday's contest.

The Rangers lineup for tonight's game against the Devils :

Chris Kreider-Lias Andersson-Ryan Gropp
Matt Puempel-Kevin Hayes-Mats Zuccarello
Jimmy Vesey-Adam Tambellini-Filip Chytil
Daniel Catenacci-David Desharnais-AndrewDesjardins

Brady Skjei-Kevin Shattenkirk
Vince Pedrie-Brendan Smith
Marc Staal-John Gilmour

Henrik Lundqvist
Alex Georgiev

What to look for :

Andersson part 2 - AV giving Andersson every chance possible to make the lineup, dressing him for the second straight game. In this contest, he centers CK20 and Ryan Gropp, who gets his first game action and tries to show his string second half wasn't solely because he played on opposite Mathew Barzal.

Desharnais and Desjardins - the team's first look at Desharnais, who could be impacted by what is done with Andersson and Chytil, while Desjardins is the only other forward, along with Andersson, to play in both games.

The debut of Chytil, the team's second, first rounder, 21st overall. He might play wing, his usual position, not center, where he has been lining up in training camp. However, there is a strong probability that it's Chytil who plays the pivot and Tambellini, a third round pick in 2013, moves to wing.

Shattenkirk's first game at MSG as a Ranger, this one paired with Skjei, not McD, though that's not too bad of a combination, as each can rush the puck.

Staal gets his chance to show he belongs in the lineup. Nick Holden didn't do much to show he deserves a third-line pairing spot. Staal, who like Holden was put on notice by AV when camp started, needs a strong camp to hold off a bevy of young d-men, including Pedrie, who gets his first game action..

Hank between the pipes and Georgiev gets some work to show he should be the #1 in Hartford

All the best to Brian Boyle in his fight against leukemia.

As a reminder, I am out of the box beginning tonight until Saturday night for Rosh Hashana and then the Sabbath. Back late Saturday night. As a heads up, this pattern will repeat itself to a certain extent the next few weeks.
