What the new Cap and Floor mean to the Coyotes

The NHL released it's new salary cap yesterday and the news is good for some teams: the cap will rise slightly to $75 million.

The floor - the minimum each team has to spend, is $55.4 million.

What this means for the Arizona Coyotes probably isn't much. With new owner Andrew Barroway now in full control, who knows what their internal budget will be?

In the past year or so, the Coyotes have actually spent some money - they took on Chris Pronger, David Bolland and Pavel Datsyuk contracts in exchange for assets, and that should be a path they continue to go down this summer.

The Coyotes current salary cap number is $42 million. To get to the floor, they only need to spend $13 mill - which shouldn't be too hard considering they hardly have a roster.

Currently they need: six or eight forwards, two or three defensemen and a starting goalie.

So hitting the cap-floor won't be any trouble.

And hey, if they want to spend to the max they have over $30 million available when you consider that they could put Dave Bolland's contract on the LTIR and recoup the space that is taking up.

Now, that is probably not likely, but considering the cap only went up by less than the price of a bad defenseman, the Coyotes can still probably continue to help out teams like Chicago who are right up against it before the off-season even starts.

John Chayka has more than proved himself, and I think the Coyotes are in good hands going forward. The team is absolutely stocked with young talent and with two first rounders and more cap space than anyone else, they should be able to add to that base significantly this summer.
