What Are the Capitals Thinking?

The Capitals have signed T.J Oshie to an insane eight year deal. The deal is worth $45 million and has a cap hit of $5.75 million.

Oshie scored 33 goals this year, and that's nice and all, but he's now another in a really long line of players who hit pay day by having freakishly high shooting percentages in a contract year.

T.J is useful for other reasons, but not $6 million dollars worth of useful. The Capitals are essentially paying him as if he'll always score 33 goals, but he never will again.

Oshie is also 30 and in decline. Honestly, if he didn't have such lucky shooting last year, it probably wasn't even his best year.

So a team with cap trouble and a whole bunch of RFA's just resigned their own player to a deal that basically gives him a two million dollar raise while knowing that it's a virtual impossibility that he'll be anywhere close to the player he was.

Also, given the way Oshie mixes it up it's doubtful he ages well. Guys who age well - Thornton, Jagr, tend to slow the game to their own pace and Oshie doesn't do that.

The Capitals have bowed to pressure and made a move that will appease fans but hurt the team both immediately and long term.

This gets a massive thumbs down from me.

Oh, and no first rounder for the Capitals tonight.
