Five straight losses to open the season is a huge detriment to making the Playoffs. No matter how you spin it - and I think the Coyotes have been more unlucky than bad - that's a huge boulder laid in the path to success.
I bet if you did the research to find out, that there aren't that many teams that go 0-5 and then make the Playoffs.
I mean, the new coach felt like he had to come out and apologize to the fans. But the coach needs to chill. No apology is needed. The Coyotes were losing while playing Shane Doan and Radim Vbrata in place of developing their prospects. That deserves an apology.
Turning over half the team, initiating a full-scale rebuild and going young - that's gonna come with some bumps and bruises. So who cares about an oh and five start when the team is so exciting and has such promise?
Not me. And, not one single Coyotes fan who knows what they're talking about.
The Coyotes - after five games - are just under 50% CF as a team, good for 17th in the league. And while controlling nearly half of all shot attempts, they've only scored 30% of the goals. That's a discrepancy sure to correct itself.
Process > Results. Noamsayin?
The Coyotes have a team PDO of 94.5 - That is incredibly unlucky.
Their save percentage is under .900 - that is guaranteed to improve.
When the Penguins were a great team, hardly anyone noticed when they weren't great anymore but kept winning, parlaying a broken down and cobbled defense into one of the luckiest Stanley Cups ever. The perception was they were a great team, and so barely anyone even commented on how lucky they actually got.
The same works for the Coyotes in the inverse. They were crap for so long, that a five game losing streak seems like par for the course for anyone who's only half-way paying attention. They always sucked, but their new suckage is based on bad luck is a hard sell to a game theory expert, let alone regular people.
Anyways, that's why they pay me the big bucks - to tell you the unpopular truth: the Coyotes have had a terrible - yet undeserving - bad start.
And when Raanta is back to his old self, when the pucks bounce the right way and the team's PDO inevitably reverts back to .100 the Coyotes will be totally fine.
Better than fine. They have a very good roster and will still make the Playoffs.
