NHL Fans Deserve Better

Washington Capitals centre Evgeny Kuznetsov is out of the lineup for today's game, and, as usual, an NHL team has completely embarrassed themselves with their lack of disclosure to paying fans about a star player's injury.

More on that in a sec, but first a note on today's game:

A couple of weeks ago, today's game between the Flyers and Capitals might have been a big deal.

But, recently, the Capitals have won four in a row. And, while the Flyers won their game yesterday, they had previously lost seven of the nine games they've played in March. Yet, somehow the Flyers have held on to third in the Metro. Be that as it may, they are no longer really a threat to get the Metro Division Title.

The Flyers probably will lose that third place spot to the Devils or the Blue Jackets, but they still have good odds for making the playoffs.

Today's game will feature no Evgeny Kuznetsov.

But how long will he be out? What, exactly is his injury? Might as well use a magic eight-ball to get your answer than inquire from an NHL team the details of an injury.

I say just assume that whenever a team says 'upper body injury' they mean it's a left nipple injury. "Day to Day" means "We Don't Know and Don't Respect Our Fans."

Good times.

Anyways, if you pay to see the Caps play, and you're interested in watching one of the three guys worth paying for, you're out of luck.

I would, however, suggest that he won't be back soon. With the playoffs all but assured, why risk him for meaningless games? Of course, they probably won't help my hockey pool team by putting him on the IR, but I guess thems the breaks.,

So no Kuznetsov today. Kuznetsov is the teams' second leading scorer, both overall, and at 5v5. (Though he does post a disconcerting 47% possession rating). Overall, in 71 games, he's got an impressive 21 goals and 71 points.

If he isn't good for the playoffs, the Capitals are screwed.

It'd be nice if they at least gave their fans some kind of update. All they did was release a joke of a P.R tweet that said "blah blah blah blah" (actually it was 'day to day' with an 'upper body injury').

The reason this is such a joke is that Kuznetsov was clearly slashed on the left wrist. Would it hurt the team in any way to say "x rays were negative, he won't be out long"??? Or maybe, just acknowledge what everyone with working eyes was able to discern?

The obfuscation of injuries is asinine in the days when anyone who cares can instantly see the replay on twitter.

So is Kuznetsov out for a couple weeks with a broken arm? I doubt it, since if that's the case, experience says that we'd already know that. Would it kill the team to say "Sore left wrist, likely bruised, going to let it rest for a week or so, then update you accordingly?"

Fans of the team deserve better.
