I Built an Outdoor Rink

Check this out Coyotes fans:

Unfortunately, all that means is a lower draft pick, and it sucks the NHL sets it up that way, but at least they're doing OK.

The Coyotes beat the Kings 5-3 last night, despite the Kings absolutely dominating the part of the game I watched - West Coast game; I fell asleep.

Anyways, this is Holden.

He is four and obsessed with hockey. His favorite player is Morgan Rielly. Since all he ever does is play hockey in the house, I built him a rink.

I started on New Years Eve, and I had no clue what I was doing. Since I am a complete amateur, it's impressive that it actually works. My water bill only went up about $20 and I have a 15 x 30 sheet of ice. The ice is smooth, and actually of semi-high quality.

Through some trial and error, it took about 10-15 days, and we got to skate once before the whole thing started to melt. Once it got cold again, I had to choose between snow melting and then freezing on it, or putting in a bunch of footprints.

After I filled in the footprints, over four days of spotty whether, we've been skating ever since.

It has turned out way better than I expected. I didn't use a liner and I spent only $15 on a hose attachment it turned out is only good for the snow banks.

The only problem is that I have no where to put the snow when it snows and so It takes forever to clear. It's one thing to shovel your driveway, but shoveling your backyard is idiotic.

We've been using it every day and Holden is learning to skate. I suck at skating and so it won't be long before he's better than me. I can't keep him off it, it's all he wants to do.

This is me retrieving the Puck from the net after his first slap shot that he took that he didn't fall down making.

This is us discussing break-out plays:

Anyways, it's been fun to build the rink. I quit smoking, so it gave me something to work on and it's been pretty therapeutic, actually. It is supposed to be above zero for the next week or so, so I hope I still have a rink when it gets cold again. I'd guess I've got almost a foot of ice, so I think it'll be OK.

Thanks for indulging me, and uh, I hope this doesn't let the cat out of the bag as to what team we cheer for!
