Coyotes Get Out the Axe

In a move that can only mean the regular season is just around the corner, the Coyotes cut 17 players from their roster late last night.

The Players Cut:

Forwards:
Brendan Perlini
Michael Bunting
Ryan MacInnis
Tyler Gaudet
Craig Cunningham
Conor Garland
Nick Merkley
Zach Boychuck
Chris Mueller
Henrik Samuelsson
Eric Selleck
Garret Ross

Goalies:
Marek Langhamer
Adini Hill

Defensemen:
Justin Hache
Dysin Mayo
Kyle Wood

I think the biggest surprise here is Henrik Samuelsson. A first rounder from 2012, he's been in the Coyotes organization it seems like forever, and I thought he might have gotten a crack at the NHL.

There was a time under Maloney that he was touted as one of the club's better prospects, but he's never really translated his junior scoring to the AHL and appears to have been passed over by an extremely talented group of young forwards.

Another somewhat surprise is Brendan Perlini, a 12th over all pick from 2014. He did not have a successful post draft year and I did not expect him to make the team, however I thought his pedigree may have at least given him a longer look.

The Coyotes have 32 players left in camp according to their team website, and they have to get down to 23 by opening night.

Two of the 32 are Tinordi (suspended) and Rieder (requested trade; holding out), so there are seven cuts to be made, if my math is right.

One of those will be the third goalie, so that leaves six cuts to make among the 12 remaining D and 15 remaining forwards.

Assuming the 23 man roster is 8 D, 13 F, 2 G the Coyotes have to cut four defenseman and two forwards.

IF OEL, Stone, Murphy and Goligoski are guaranteed roster spots, that means that four out of Schenn, Chychrun, DeAngelo, Michalek, Dahlbeck, Mermis, Connauton and McBain will make it.

I'd pick Schenn, Chychrun, DeAngelo and McBain, but I doubt Tippet will. If I had to guess I'd say he will pick Schenn, Dahlbeck, Michalek and McBain.

They only need to cut two forwards and I would guess that those will be Stephan Fournier and Lawson Crouse.

The end.
