Peter Forsberg may finally be at the end of the line in his injury-riddled career. After completing an exhibition game with the Icebreakers (the charity team he co-founded), Forsberg was interviewed on Swedish television.

As reported by Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet, the 37-year-old Forsberg expressed pessimism about his chances of attempting yet another comeback. Forsberg said that his chronically injured right foot and ankle (for which he underwent another round of surgery this past spring) are not holding up well enough to consider playing on it.

"If it's going to be like this, I don't think I'll be able to continue playing," said Forsberg. "... After today, the odds are slim that I'll play. It's about how the foot sits in the skate. It doesn't function and it hasn't functioned well in a long time."

Forsberg stopped just short of announcing his retirement but said he pushed himself a little harder in the final game of the exhibition series and saw that the foot just wasn't going to hold up. Before making any further announcements, he plans to talk with his doctor and trainers one final time to see if there's anything left to try.

"We're going to have to rack our brains one last time and hope we can get it together," Forsberg said.

Barring a miracle, people close to Forsberg expect a retirement announcement within the next couple weeks. Earlier this week, Modo coach Charles Berglund said that he did not expect Forsberg to be able to play this season and no wants another "will he or won't he" distraction to drag on again.
