In this edition of the hotstove, we share our thoughts on the blockbuster trade centered around Artemi Panarin and Brandon Saad.

I really like this deal, and completely understand it, for both sides.

From Columbus' perspective, they wanted to make their offense more dynamic and I think Panarin has a little more skill and creativity than Brandon Saad does. His presence may also help convince Ilya Kovalchuk to play there, should the Jackets be able to work out a deal with the Devils after July 1.

From Chicago's perspective, they get the more efficient goal scorer and the better two-way forward. They also get more control -- Saad has four more years on his contract as opposed to two -- so they don't have to worry about him potentially getting a raise anytime soon.

Tie, for now.

Aside from playing the same position and being about the same age, it's really not fair to compare the two NHL players in the deal. Panarin is the elite scorer on the wing that Columbus wants paired with Alexander Wennberg, and Saad brings his two-way game, elite speed—and the stretch pass—back to Chicago.

It's a value for value deal in that regard that should benefit both clubs. Where this deal may hinge is in the development of the two secondary pieces, LW Tyler Motte and G Anton Forsberg. Forsberg has talent and may have the higher upside, but may also be less of a sure thing than Motte, whose compact frame, north-south style, and ability to chip in some goals now and then makes hm likely a decent middle line left winger over his career in the NHL.

Forsberg becomes the immediate #2 to Corey Crawford, and the Hawks and goaltending coach Jimmy Waite will invest the time to see if he can eventually be their number 1.

I think if you're another GM you have to be really wary when a team is willing to trade you one of their guys for a guy they already had.

I don't really like appealing to the experts arguments - just because a real live professional hockey GM makes a move doesn't mean it's automatically good.

However, in this case, I have to believe that the Blackhawks know exactly what they're doing here. Saad is a really good player, I don't know their deep stats off the top of my head, but I think they're probably similar in offensive production.

So edge to the Hawks here.
