Thoughts on the Rangers/Coyotes trade?

The Arizona Coyotes made a big draft day trade sending the 7th overall pick and Anthony DeAngelo to the New York Rangers in exchange for Derek Stepan and Antti Raanta.

In this edition of the hotstove, we share our thoughts on the move.

I get why the Rangers made the move -- they'll still be able to score without Stepan and they wanted/needed to clear cap -- but I like the Coyotes' side of the deal.

In Stepan, the Coyotes get a consistent 50+ center who can score goals and hold his own in a top line role. The Coyotes are loaded with prospects and draft picks so at some point they needed to cash some of that in and try to take a step forward. This trade -- as well as the Niklas Hjalmarsson trade -- will help them do that.

I am also high on Antti Raanta. He hasn't played a ton of games over the last few years, but he has shown really well any time he's been given the chance. I think he could be a starter, or at least a solid platoon option, in Arizona and he carries a very team friendly cap hit of $1 million.

The Rangers *could* be getting a couple solid players whereas we *know* the Coyotes are getting a couple solid players. I give the edge to the Coyotes.

It's a little confusing from the Rangers perspective, because they're a team that wants to win now, but they don't really do anything intimidate here but save money.

So from the Rangers perspective, it's a good deal if they spend the money smartly and improve. Also, DeAngleo has a high potential, he looked good last year when he played.

The Coyotes pay a high price, but they get a consistent 55 point centreman and a lottery-ticked starting goalie, and what they paid comes from a position of strength (they don't need another prospect at this point, and DeAngelo has a skill-set well represented on their team already).

Assuming the Rangers end up with Shattenkirk due to this, then I think it's a move that helps both teams. If Raanta is good then it's an especially good deal for Arizona.

The thing about these kinds of deals is that they appear to be a match for two teams that need to make a move based around exchanging risk. Arizona gets a player that can help them but with a big contract for 4 more years and hopes Stepan can keep producing until age 31.

For NYR they get cap relief, a lottery ticket for the draft at 7th overall and defence help. Oh, they also have up a good goalie prospect that was likely sought after by many teams. Who took the bigger risk?

I think the Rangers did and that could mean more moves to come like adding Shattenkirk or more as UFAs. Hope it works out but hope is never a plan.
