Thoughts on the Mike Hoffman trades?

In this edition of the hotstove, we share our thoughts on the pair of Mike Hoffman trades involving the Florida Panthers, San Jose Sharks, and Ottawa Senators.

Todd Cordell

I love this for San Jose. They acquired Hoffman, and upgraded a 6th to a 5th, for pennies – an overpaid 3rd line winger and a mediocre defense prospect – and then flipped him for a 2nd, 4th and 5th. Essentially, they parlayed a player they didn't want into draft picks and cap space, which they can use to go big game hunting in free agency.

Florida took a risk trading for Hoffman but he has averaged 26 goals per season over the last four and the best asset the Panthers parted with was a 2019 2nd. If things settle down off the ice in Florida, they'll make out like bandits.

I really don't like this from Ottawa's perspective. As a rebuilding team, they would have been better off with draft picks. If they find themselves in a position where they need to get to the cap floor, they could have taken on a deal like Marian Hossa's (big cap, low salary) or simply overpaid for a free agent on a one-year deal.

Sean Maloughney

Biggest winner here is obviously Doug Wilson. Not only was he able shed some cap by offloading Boedker who was an overpaid 3rd line winger but he turned around and picked his team up a nice collection of draft picks at the same time. The biggest moves may be yet to come with the Sharks who are now in a great position to take a run at a big name like Kovalchuk or Tavares… something tells me Dorion won’t be in a hurry to deal Karlsson to San Jose.

This is one of the rare times when the team who got the best player isn’t the clear winner of a trade. Hoffman the player is a skilled winger who will slot in great in the Panthers lineup. However much is left to be desired about Hoffman the person. Considering how quickly the Sens traded him speaks volumes on how they view the player.

Biggest loser is clearly Dorion and the Sens who got the second best deal of the day of teams who traded Mike Hoffman. Not only are the Senators left with Boedker who doesn’t scream “rebuilding player to build around,” but they weren’t even able to avoid having Hoffman play in their division. I can’t imagine this entices RFA Mark Stone and pending free agent Matt Duchene to sign long term contracts.

The only thoughts I have about this trade would be offensive to the Ottawa Senators and their fans.

I find the entire thing confusing. Shouldn't the Senators be trying to get draft picks? What do they want with Boedker and a bad prospect?
How does this help, other than shedding salary?

Boedker always looks like he can be better than he is, and he isn't going to bring them much return when they inevitably flip him.

It looks to me like the Sharks got a better package for Hoffman than the Senators did. This just looks very embarrassing for the Senators.

1. Hilarious.

2. Wilson looks smart.

3. Tallon trying to redeem himself looks hilarious.

That's the gist of it quickly. Hopefully this will be the cloud that lifts over the Senators' season, though it's still looking bleak. Dorion needs to make sure the Sens do not hand Colorado Jack Hughes on a platter and Boedker is a solid, if unspectacular player. I honestly feel he will be a good fit for Ottawa. His speed can be very useful beside a guy like Dzingel. But he's not the solution as everybody knows.

Bergman is a decent prospect, but low end. He's essentially a 5/6 level guy and unfourtunately there are too many of those in the Sens organization.

It was a necessary deal for Dorion and he saved his owner money (shocker!) while keeping his team near status quo. This still feels like a loss due to the fact that if it is true that the team's management knew about this situation, they should have dealt him for the premium. Let's be honest, Hoffman at the deadline sans drama is worth a 1st rounder and a second piece. He's a good scoring winger on a decent contract.

Wilson wins the day for the Sharks. He gets the cap space he needs and gets out of the Boedker deal which has been a failure. He gets picks to make some noise and has set himself to be a big seeker in the Free Agency market. He also has a lot of trade assets. Avoiding having to buyout or hold salary on Boedker was key. It allows them to buyout or hold salary on Martin who needs to go. Depending on how Wilson deals with the extra money and assets, this could be a huge win.

For Florida...well...you have to love the overcompensation after giving away Smith and Marchessault. Having to take a big problem and pay for it, instead of keeping either or both. They paid a good price for him. He was worth more, but that's what happens with baggage.

This is probably my favourite trade sequences in years just from the insanity levels.
