Evander Kane is expected to sign a seven-year contract extension with San Jose worth an average of $7 million per year.

In this edition of the hotstove, we share our thoughts on the deal.

Let me preface this by saying I do like Evander Kane's game. He's a volume shooter who can score some goals, skate like the wind, and play with an edge. He's a valuable player.

This deal is a little rich for my blood, though. Kane has one 50+ point season since 2011-12. He has never reached 60 points. He has also missed 97 games over the last five years, which averages out to be a little more than 19 per.

In other words, he is not a high-end producer and staying healthy is a real problem. I know UFA leverage leads to big money for notable players but I think the Sharks overpaid here.

If 7x7 is the actual deal for Kane, that will instantly become one of the worst contracts in the league. Kane is a fine player, but he's only had more than 45 points twice. Obviously adjusting for injuries makes him look a bit better, as he probably would have reached that mark a couple more times if he had been healthy.

However, even if we look at his career high of 57 points, is that really a player you want to give $7M to? I get that salaries are always climbing, but I expected him to be getting a cap hit in the high 5's or around 6. Luckily, the term shouldn't be too big of an issue since he is only 27 in August, but the last few years of the contract could be even uglier than it already is. Kane is certainly an impactful winger when he's healthy, but he should not be one of your two or three highest paid players.
