Both the Florida Panthers and New York Islanders (semi) recently made coaching changes and have climbed back into the playoff picture under their new bench bosses. In this edition of the hotstove we discuss which team is more likely to hold a spot when all is said and done.

Both teams have been playing very good hockey of late but I'll go with the Panthers. With Aleksander Barkov and Jonathan Huberdeau both in the lineup they look like a completely different team and I think their depth has more to offer in the way of offense than the Islanders' depth guys.

The thing that really makes this an easy decision for me is the divisions each team plays in. The Panthers play in a wide-open Atlantic Division where even 1st place is up for grabs, whereas the Islanders are only really fighting for the final Wild Card spot.

In my opinion it's the Panthers. They not only made a coaching change but they also became a healthier team too. That makes a big difference. I think the Panthers roster is a bit more robust as well and their goaltending could play a big role their too, it's just simply better. It's not that the Islanders aren't a good team, they just aren't as good as the Panthers.

James Tanner

The Panthers are a way, way better team than the Islanders. Top to bottom, the Panthers are one of the NHL's best teams. The Islanders are not.
