In this edition of the hotstove, we share our thoughts on the four-year, $21.2 million contract extension ($5.3M per) Tomas Tatar signed with the Detroit Red Wings.

I have no problems with this deal.
Over the last three seasons, Tatar has averaged 25 goals, 49 points, and scored 5v5 goals at a more efficient rate than the likes of Joe Pavelski, John Tavares, Jamie Benn and Sean Monahan, among others.
When you consistently overpay for gritty, less productive players like Justin Abdelkader and Darren Helm, it's pretty hard to draw the line on a player like Tatar.
I think he'll be worth the money and, should the Wings wish to retool and trade him down the road, it should be a pretty moveable contract given there isn't excessive term.

I don't know if it's overpayment for traditional reasons but I do think that 46 point players are probably not worth 5.3 million. The wings were in a tough spot, they are not deep, they need help and would Tatar help them enough individually or by getting enough return?
The contract is not bad but it's also not great. The problem I see is he Wings should not have allowed themselves to be Ina situation where they needed Tatar this much given his production and now cost. Should he have been part of a rebuild? Maybe but then they would have had to make that decision with other players too.
