I really like this deal for the Rangers.
Zibanejad has averaged ~51 points per 82 games over the last three seasons, which is 1st line production, and, at 24, his best days are still ahead of him.
With a five-year term, the Rangers have Zibanejad locked up for what should be the entirety of his prime. By the time his game starts to decline even a smidgen, he'll be off the books.
Centers are generally very expensive, as are players who can produce offense. I think the Rangers did well with the term and price considering.
This contract has potential to look quite good a little bit down the road, especially if Zibanejad can take it up another notch (and I think he can).

This deal seems pretty darn fair particularly because it's only 5 years and not longer and the salary is under 6 million per year. Zibanejad is a decent centre who compares to a second line centre well. At age 24 the Rangers get him through his peak years at a fair cost.
What Zibanejad isn't is a two-way shutdown player- he's limited in that part and in fairness the contract probably values him that way too. All in the Rangers did well and there is upside for them if he gets back to his goal production levels in Ottawa.
