Erik Gudbranson isn't as bad as many make him out to be, however, I don't think he's much more than a good depth blue liner.

Long-term I think Jared McCann has more to give. He had a decent rookie campaign as a 19-year-old and seems like a pretty good bet to be a solid middle-6 forward.

On top of clearing cap space and getting younger - while arguably better - the Panthers also upgraded a 5th round pick to a 4th and picked up Vancouver's 2nd round pick (33rd overall).

To me this is a pretty easy win for Florida.

Florida. Hands down.

This morning I have been trying to figure out where the Canucks are coming from in this trade. Overall they traded more assets (two picks to one) better assets ( a high 2nd pick and a 4th for a 5th) and a more cost controlled, younger player.

I like Gudbranson, but he is not THAT pivotal a player for Florida. He will probably be looking for around 5 Million on an extension, and the Panthers have young Michael Matheson playing his way into the NHL.

McCann looks like he could be quite a player as well. Vancouver's pick is going to be No. 33, which still should net you a really good player.

And thinking about it from a logistical standpoint, are the Canucks going to be competitive in two three years? Like really competitive? A cup contender? When Gudbranson starts pushing 27-30? Maybe, maybe not, but with the current state of the roster I find that hard to believe.

Yea it is tough for Panther fans to part with what they feel is a future captain and stalwart defensive player, they got back a nice package for someone who in the long run may have caused more monetary problems then he is worth.

Well if you saw my Twitter feed after that happened it was all about how Florida took it to Vancouver and yet no games have been played nor has any data been there to measure. However, it's easy to make some assumptions right?

The Canucks traded a 1st round pick (McCann 24th overall) a 2nd and a 4th for a defence man who plays a style that most teams (smart ones) are trying to move away from, oh and they got a 5th pick too. Basically it was a swap of risks.

Did the Canucks get a player who has a less risky future than what they gave up? Did the Panthers get a player who brings them more upside than what they have now? Therein lies the details of the deal. Right now the Canucks got something they needed more than the Panthers but long term it should play out better for Florida if they can turn those lottery tickets (draft picks) into winning numbers, even if it is just a 10$ prize.
