I understand why Chicago made the trade but I don't really like it for them while I love this deal for Carolina.

The Hurricanes took on one year of a mediocre player's pricey contract and in exchange for it they landed a 21-year-old forward who can play in their top-6.

Sure, the Blackhawks also acquired a couple draft picks but the vast majority of picks outside the 1st round never amount to anything substantial. Even if the Blackhawks land a good player with one of those picks said player won't be ready to contribute for at least a few years.

Besides cap space this season the Blackhawks really didn't get much value given the likelihood those picks don't pan out. I don't think parting with Teuvo Teravainen is worth it.

Win/Win

Chicago gets out from underneath a horrible cap hit on an overpaid player, and get two mid/upper draft chips back for it. Yea they lose TT but he seemed to be struggling, and I think Chicago got the player they were hoping he would become in Artemi Panarin.

Carolina gets a potentially great player in TT, who will get a better shot and quality minutes in a rebuilding organization. While Bickell is not incredibly useful, he can still play bottom six and guide the younger players. Oh, and they gave up a 2nd and a 3rd, but still have a two 1sts and a ridiculous amount of other picks. Draft picks were at a surplus.

Both GMs did well on this one.

Not in love with it.

A couple of thoughts, however. The team and some fans (and I) really started to question Teravainen on a number of fronts this past season. Can he play C in the NHL? Or is he always going to be a perimeter winger, sort of Pierre Marc Bouchard 2.0. The kid is terrified of any kind of contact and hurts possession because of it—also seems very blasé' about offseason training, the exact thing he needs. All that said, if the light ever goes on and he gets a fire underneath him, this could end up as the Hawks throwing good money after bad. Right now, the cap room helps the team a lot. Teravainen was at best a utility guy for the Hawks and really not a playoff asset this past year. The deal comes down to anything the Hawks get out of the picks acquired and the cap room—weighted against TT's eventual upside.

I don't understand why the Blackhawks would make this trade instead of just buying out Bickel - the penaltiy for buying him out doesnt' exceed the penalty they just extracted from themselves, namely a player with Selke potential.

They trade a good young player to shed some salary. Instead, they should have just bought out the dud and kept the kid. Carolina clearly wins this trade and it's a a puzzling, possibly horrible move for the Blackhawks.

21 years old and already playing great defense at the NHL level, if Teravainen ever improves his scoring he's a star player. At worst he can be an extremely useful, shot suppression defensive forward. Added bonus: if he doesn't score much, he'll never cost a lot.

With what they're paying Seabrook, Kruger and Asimov, this trade is ridiculous.

The Canes just got a top-ten in the first round-quality player (originally picked 18th) for two lottery tickets and a willingness to spend some money on a player likely headed to the minors.

Peter Tessier

While I was the odd man out on the last topic as both Todd and John had Bickell it seems that they know a bit more than me based on Wednesday's trade. So at first blush I like the trade for the Hurricanes as they get Teravainen who should really help the Canes down the middle and they take a year of Bickell.

The Blackhawks get two picks a second rounder this year and a third rounder next year. It's not a huge loss with Bickell but Teravainen could affect them down the road. This move though was the first of a few we should see dealing with the cap crunch a few teams will face so maybe it's actually a pretty fair deal based on both team's needs.
