I like this deal for both teams.

The Anaheim Ducks had to trade one of their goaltenders or they'd lose one for nothing in next year's expansion draft. It basically had to be Frederik Andersen, too, as John Gibson is signed for the next few years for just $2.3 million per. The Ducks are in a sticky cap situation right now and they couldn't afford to pay Andersen what he wanted even if they wanted to keep him.

So, in essence, the Ducks had to trade Andersen, there weren't many suitors and they still landed a (very late) 1st and a 2nd in 2017. That's a pretty good haul.

From Toronto's perspective they get a young starting goaltender for basically a pair of 2nd round picks. Those picks won't be anything substantial for at least a few seasons - if ever - and the Leafs still have 11 picks this year so it's not as they couldn't afford to part with some to fill a need.

The Leafs' brain trust deemed Andersen a good fit for Mike Babcock's system and, given all the smart moves they've made over the last year, I'm willing to trust them on this one.

I think the Leafs win this trade by a mile. Not that the Ducks lose it, I mean, they had to trade one of their goalies and you don't tend to get much for goalies, so no problem there.

But the Leafs are huge winners here. They get an above average starting goalie who's only 26 and has potential to be even better than he has been.

Not much risk either because odds are you don't get a starting goalie with either of those two picks. So for very little risk they get their goalie and still have a ton of extra picks.

Some would say in Lou we trust as he didn't do to bad with Brodeur and Schneider but what makes this one interesting is that Andersson is almost 27 and does not have a large body of work.

So why give him a 5-year deal to boot? It's not a bad trade as the Leafs are flush with picks and prospects so that's how you use them but the 5-year deal after might be the kicker that determines good or bad in the future.
