I like the contract but I don't think there's much of a chance for it to be a steal unless Sean Monahan improves his defensive game. He is perceived to be really good defensively, and maybe he will be down the road, but right now his shot and goal suppression numbers aren't exactly impressive.

That said, even if he simply continues doing what he's been doing over the last couple years it'd be hard to call it a bad deal. It's hard to score in today's NHL and over the last two years Monahan has averaged 29 goals and more than 60 points. He's a really good scorer and, at 21, his best days should still be ahead of him. That's what the Flames are banking on.

I find it hard to believe there is anyone who dislikes this deal. Monahan is 21 going on 22 and has a 30 goal, three straight 20+ goal and two 60 point seasons to his name. He has strong chemistry with Gaudreau and the two seem poised to be one of the more dynamic duos in the NHL going forward. Very reminiscent of Lecavalier-St. Louis in their primes. The big goal scoring centre and the ultra talented midget.

It would not surprise me if he is the heir apparent to Giordano in terms of the next Flames Captain and this extension helps support that.

He's one of the best under 22 players in the NHL and the Flames are lucky to have him for a long time now.

It's a good deal. I'm surprised they didn't bother to take the 8th year, and that's either side. As an RFA he had two choices and he probably took the best one as why turn down 44 million. Yes that's the simple explanation but look at comparable such as Mark Scheifele.

For Monahan he did well as he earns 200k more per year than Scheifele and may not quite be the player Scheifele is but that is debatable. What both the Flames and Jets are betting on with these two is that they are going to get value for that 6 million plus salary later on or sooner and each player is capable of delivering it.

As a comparable I like the Scheifele deal more because of this:

However that does not mean Calgary and Monahan did not reach a fair agreement they did, just not as good as it could have been for Calgary.
