In this edition of the hotstove we share our thoughts on Mike Hoffman's four-year, $5.18 million extension with the Ottawa Senators.

I love this deal for the Senators.

Over the last two seasons only nine players have scored more 5 v 5 goals than Mike Hoffman. If you adjust for ice time and look at 5 v 5 goals per 60 he is 6th in the league behind only only Vladimir Tarasenko, Rick Nash, Tyler Seguin, Patrick Kane, Corey Perry and Alexander Ovechkin. That's a pretty good crop to be bunched in with.

In today's NHL it is extremely difficult to score goals on a consistent basis. Doing so at 5 v 5 is even harder and few are better in that regard than Hoffman.

On top of his elite scoring numbers - in terms of both 5 v 5 goals and points - he also drives play and the Senators have controlled 57% of the goals at full-strength since he has entered the league. Without Hoffman on the ice that number dips to to 47.3.

He is an absolute steal at $5.18M per.

This is a good deal for the Sens and Hoffman. Let's not get overly complicated here but the guy scores at even strength with 39 of his 56 goals coming at 5v5 over the last two years. He's 26 so they are paying him until the magical age of 30 where anything seems to happen after player hit it.

He also has the majority of his 39 assists as primary ones (25) over the same period. He drives play and while given a fair amount of starts on the OZ he generally makes the team better in all situations. In fact when looking at data I can't even understand Hoffman still stands out in the positive.

Be happy Sens fans this is a good deal.
