In this edition of the hotstove we share our thoughts on Chris Kreider's four-year, $4.625 million (per) extension with the New York Rangers.

I really like this deal for the Rangers.

Kreider has recorded at least 20 goals and 43 points in each of the last two seasons while also making a significant impact at 5 v 5. His points per 60 minutes played in that span of 1.85 puts him ahead of players like Ryan Johansen, Nathan MacKinnon and Sean Monahan, among others.

He has also made a big time influence on his team's underlying numbers. At 5 v 5 the Rangers have controlled better than 50% of the shot attempts and almost 63% of the goals with Kreider over the last couple seasons. Without Kreider those numbers drop to 47% and 52.3%.

He is worth the $4.625M right now and there is still potential for higher output if given the ice time he deserves. He will be 29 by the time he needs a new deal, which means the Rangers just locked him up for the entirety of his prime at a reasonable cap hit.

Well done.

The first thing I saw after the deal was comparisons to Kadri and I'm not sure that's fair. However, the funny thing is the belief is that teams pay a premium for centres and Kreider is the winger earning a bit more. That being said many NHL teams are still enamoured with size and Kreider is a big guy.

So is it a good deal? It's probably fair and that's the way it should be. I'm surprised the term is so short but it does give the player an option to cash in once more at age 30 and that's not a bad thing for him. It does suggest the team might not have that much faith in him? Maybe, but it's thr Rangers who knows what they are doing right now.
