After a long negotiation process the Anaheim Ducks and Carl Hagelin finally agreed to terms on a new contract extension.

Hagelin put pen to paper on a four-year deal worth $16 million. In this edition of the hotstove we discuss whether or not Hagelin is worth the relatively lucrative deal he just signed.

On first glance it seems like a lot but I think Hagelin is worth the money.

His scoring rate stats have been that of a 2nd liner - which he's now being paid to be - and his possession numbers reflect that as well.

The Ducks struggled to deal with Chicago's speed in the Conference Finals last year and they made acquiring more speed a priority this summer. Hagelin certainly brings that to the table and when you factor in a) his production; b) his impact on possession; c) his ability to kill penalties and; d) he's only 26 it's hard not to like the deal.

With the likes of Ryan Getzlaf, Corey Perry, Ryan Kesler and Jakob Silfverberg, among others, around Hagelin it wouldn't surprise me if he sets career highs in goals and points next season.

Hamelin may not be a steal at that price but he'll probably be worth what he's getting.

Tim Chiasson

I think he could be if the Anaheim Ducks use him right and give him an expanded offensive role. His numbers suggest that he might be able to handle a bigger role with success - and that will be Anaheim's best shot at getting great value out of a 4x4 deal.

Hagelin is a player that isn't going to hurt you when he's out on the ice, so while the dollar amount is a bit high for me, I think the contract can still be salvaged as a good one if he's trusted more and given a little more ice-time.

Overall, the Ducks have space to do this deal and they overpaid everyone else this summer anyway. Hagelin's camp certainly wasn't going to let that slide.
