Thivierge: The Jersey

With there being little actual news to talk about at this point in the offseason I decided to write the Canadiens uniforms. Some of you may already know that I am a big fan of aesthetics in hockey and am the creator of the uniform thread on this site, so why not dedicate a blog about the Canadiens uniforms. It is an iconic look that has not changed and only seen very little modifications over history, but with the switch to Adidas what if that were all to change? And to avoid any confusion, I know the new Adidas sets were just presented and what was unveiled will be what we see on the ice for a few seasons.

The Canadiens' home set is perfect, there is no need to change it and the style is distinctly their own. Sure now the Panthers have copied the abdomen stripe pattern for both the home and the away, and the new Minnesota Wild Adidas home jersey have it now. Let's just draw it up to imitation being the greatest form of flattery. The recent changes on the collars a few seasons back with the laces was a fantastic decision, I don’t see where else they could modify them.

As for the roads, that is where I would make a change. I would like for them to throw back to what they wore for a brief stint in the 50s and brought back as a 3rd/throw back from time-to-time and that would be the white reversal of their current homes. That look just has something so majestic about it and carries the exact same class as the red jerseys have. I know at this point it would be sacrilege to make a change, but the Canadiens have made slight changes to it in the 90s (going from a two-layer font to three), that might make the organization more willing to make a change in the future.

Time for a full-time 3rd? 3rds will be taking a break league-wide for the 2017-18 season, but are expected to comeback for the following season. Is this the time for the Canadiens to adopt a full-time alternate instead of one-offs every so often? I believe so, seems that most teams have them and the 5 other original 6 teams had them last year (Chicago doesn't have a true 3rd, though the yearly outdoor game they're in always presents us with a different look for them) and Montreal should join the club. I'd suggest a throwback (don't worry not those barber pole things), and it would be either the blue/white the stand alone C, the darker CA jerseys or red/green CAC jerseys. The three are nice and clean and respect the storied history of the franchise. Going way out there would be a blue version of their home jerseys, I believe Spokane of the WHL has that look, why not try it?

When ads on jerseys inevitably do happen will Montreal go with a Bell or Molson patch? The Mayor's face (he'll justify the price)? Where and what would be appropriate for the Canadiens jersey, tough to say they won't look good on any jersey.

Have your say! What is your ideal look for the Canadiens? Keep it, changes, additions, feel free to share in the comments section.
