Ted Nolan teams play a signature tough, grinding style.

On Friday night, the tough, agrressive style of play ended up biting the Sabres in the patoot. Committed too many penalties that led to too many power play opportunities.

1st Period

04:41: BUF Matt D'Agostini Delaying Game-Puck over glass
06:16: BUF Marcus Foligno Boarding (major) against Brandon Pirri
06:16: BUF Marcus Foligno Game misconduct

2nd Period

10:27: BUF Ville Leino Slashing against Dmitry Kulikov
19:41: BUF Tyler Ennis Roughing against Vincent Trocheck

3rd Period

03:18: BUF Matt D'Agostini Hi-sticking against Nick Bjugstad
06:57: BUF Tyler Myers Interference against Vincent Trocheck
14:15: BUF Luke Adam Interference against Jimmy Hayes

When your team takes 8 penalties and the opponent only commits two penalties, its going to be a long night. That it was in Sunrise.

Marcus Foligno was assessed a five-minute major for boarding and was given a game misconduct after hitting Brandon Pirri into the Buffalo bench.

The Sabres killed off 4:55 of the 5 minute major, then were scored upon with 5 second remaining in the penalty kill.

After the game, Foligno told Sabres.com that he didn't agree with the 5-and-a-game sentence for his crime.

“I don’t think it was worthy of getting kicked out of the game,” Foligno said. “I think that put our team down in a very tough position and It was a tough call to make at that time.”

Foligno may be facing supplemental discipline from the NHL Department of Player Safety.

“You never want to get suspended. I want to be that player that’s a clean player,” he said. “I have been and I think I’m respectful when I’ve been hitting guys. I do it to take them out of the play but I don’t aim for injuring guys.”

The Cats killed the Sabres with two PPGs. Final score 2-0.

“We shot ourselves in the foot for the second game in two nights,” Sabres alternate captain Christian Ehrhoff said. “When you have to kill that many penalties, it’s tough. It takes a lot of energy out of you and we didn’t get enough offensive zone time again tonight. It wasn’t good enough.”

On the bright side, Michael Neuvirth was impressive in his first start for the Sabres.

Neuvirth made 42 saves on 44 shots. He was 26 for 26 on five on five shot attempts, however, he allowed the 2 PPGs.

Roberto Luongo stole the show in his first game back in the Florida net after an eight season stint in Vancouver. Luongo made 25 saves for the shutout.

The shutout was the 66th of Luongo's career, his 27th with the Panthers and his first with Florida since February 7, 2006, when he made 44 saves in a 5-0 victory against the Washington Capitals

Check out Luongo's Randy "Macho Man" Savage chapeau. That's badass!

Thanks, Panthers TV
