More and more, it's beginning to look more and more like Rick Dudley was the man that the Buffalo Sabres wanted to hire as their next GM. The mere request of Buffalo to be granted permission to interview Habs AGM Dudley prompted Habs GM Marc Bergevin to offer Dudley a long term contract extension to keep the 64-year old, experienced, high-demand hockey man in his current job in Montreal.

Dudley is the one that got away.

Life goes on. The Sabres need a GM and there are still some very capable and attractive candidates available.

The favorites for the Buffalo GM job continue to be Boston Bruins AGM Jim Benning and Pittsburgh Penguins AGM Jason Boterill whom LaFontaine has been given permission to interview.

Buffalo Sabres president of hockey operations suggested to Rochester media last week that he has added a candidates or candidates to his.

Ottawa Sun reporter Bruce Garrioch tweeted this afternoon that he has confirmed that LaFontaine and the Sabres have been granted permission to interview their AGM Tim Murray for Darcy Regier’s old job in Buffalo. He currently holds the dual portfolio of being the GM of the Sens’ AHL affiliate club Binghamton Senators of the American Hockey League, as well as being the AGM of the Ottawa Senators. He was hired in 2007.

Were I LaFontaine, I'd want to explore Murray's philosophy on building through the draft. He's done a really nice job with the Bingo Sens. He's won a Calder Trophy in the AHL and that should count for something.

I see Murray as a future GM. In my opinion, he needs more time at the NHL level. He wouldn't be my first choice to lead a re-build in Buffalo. I would hire Jim Benning to do that.

I've heard that the Sabres are interested to interview former Dallas Stars GM Joe Nieuwendyk.
