Evander Kane is fully aware that his name is trending in social media. Kane likes the attention. That's what happens when star hockey players go tarps-off and post the pics on Instagram.
Does he like the constant trade rumors?
“My name seems to create a buzz with some reporters and radio stations. I wonder if I have some thank-you cards coming,” Kane told The Vancouver Province on Friday.
Kane was attending a golf tournament in his hometown as part of the ten year anniversary reunion party of the Vancouver Giants Memorial Cup championship.
Kane is a wanted man around the NHL right now. Sabres GM Jason Botterill has gotten inquiries on Kane, the robust even strength goal scorer. Kane has scored 48 goals the past two seasons in Buffalo with 40 of the goals coming at 5v5.
Botterill can trade Kane today for a top four D.
Kane's Q-rating will rise even more at the NHL Draft in Chicago.
The Vancouver Canucks (Chris Tanev?), LA Kings (Jake Muzzin?), Vegas Golden Knights, Anaheim Ducks (Brandon Montour? ), San Jose Sharks (Mark Edouard Vlasic?) and Minnesota Wild (Jonas Brodin?) intently scouted Kane last season.
“Do I worry about the rumours? No. The funny part about rumours is that if you don’t know something is going on, then nobody else does,” Kane said. “I have an agent who is knowledgable and tapped in. He gives me updates when I need updates. I’d like to think I’m well informed when I need to be.”
Kane will be an unrestricted free agent on July 1, 2018. Kane will earn $5.25 million in the final season of his contract.
Kane will get a fat pay raise in his next contract. He scores 28 goals last season and would have score 35 or more had be not missed 11 games with four broken ribs. Kane was injured midway through the season opener in a collision with Montreal D Alexei Emelin.
“I came back too early from the rib injury, but it was because I was hungry to play and wanted to play,” said Kane.
“It took me a little while to get back into the swing of things. In those final 58 games, I thought I showed consistency offensively.”
Kane isn't sure if his new GM Botterill and new head coach Phil Housley are intent on keeping him around long term.
“I’m getting prepared to start another NHL season. Hopefully it’s in Buffalo,” he said.
Kane's name was front and center at the 2017 NHL trade deadline because of his blazing hot offensive production. With 25 even-strength goals in 70 games this season, Evander Kane finished the season ranked ninth in the league with .36 even-strength goals per game. It was the best rate by any Sabre since Jason Pominville scored 30 even-strength goals in 82 games (.37) in the 2006-07 season.
Kane scored each of his 27 goals this season in his last 57 games.
Kane was tied for 15th in the NHL with 25 even-strength goals despite not scoring his first goal until December 3.
From December 1 until the end of the regular season, Kane ranked ninth among all NHL skaters in goals (27) and led the NHL in even-strength goals with 25.
Kane landed 260 shots on goal this season (10.8% shooting percentage), which was 11th in NHL final NHL shot standings.
Kane averaged 3.7 shots per game, which was 5th in the NHL.
At the trade deadline there were several contending teams looking for a 5v5 scorer .
On February 10, former Sabres GM Tim Murray spoke glowingly about Kane's contributions to the Sabres. Murray was also asked if he would be trading Kane at the March 1 NHL trade deadline.
Some of Kane's teammates are not impressed with the talented winger's lack of urgency as it relates to working out and bonding with the group while at the rink. Murray was working with Kane to re-brand him as a "better teammate". Now that Murray is gone, Kane will have to do his own bidding in Buffalo.
"I've said from day one, when Evander steps on the ice, I'm very happy with him," Murray said. "He plays the game hard. He's going to compete every night and every shift. He's the last guy most nights I'm going to complain about his lack of effort.
"The off-ice stuff, we've worked through that and we continue to work with him. It will never be forgotten obviously, nor do we want to forget. You learn from mistakes. But on the ice, what I see now is what we traded for I think. I'm a fan of his game."
“I thought I did a pretty good job of that last season,” Kane said. “I’m just going to continue to let my play on the ice do all the negotiating and talking and answering for me.
“When it comes to me as a player, I’m always 100 per cent. I always put my best foot forward, no matter how I am feeling, no matter what type of injuries I have going on. I always try to play to the best of my ability and always try to be a factor, whether that’s scoring or being physical or blocking shots. I want to help my team win and I think I’ve proven that over the course of my career.”
