Buffalo Sabres head coach Phil Housley has hired Chris Hajt to serve as one of his assistant coaches.

Hajt, 39, spent the last three seasons as an assistant coach for the Los Angeles Kings’ AHL affiliate, where he helped guide the Manchester Monarchs to a Calder Cup Championship after the 2014-15 season. The Monarchs also earned playoff berths in each of the last two seasons as the Ontario Reign, including a division title in 2015-16.

The Saskatoon, Saskatchewan native is the son of Buffalo Sabres alumnus Bill Hajt, who was a teammate of Housley's in the 1980s. If my memory serves correctly, Housley and Hajtb were defensive partners in 1982-83.

Chris Hajt also served as an assistant coach for the Guelph Storm from 2008 to 2014. During his time in Guelph, the team made the playoffs in all six of his seasons and won an OHL championship in 2014.

A former defenseman, Hajt played six NHL games for the Edmonton Oilers and Washington Capitals, adding 91 points (20G, 71A) in 477 career AHL games.

Hajt will inherit a re-tooled Buffalo blue line that includes Rasmus Ristolainen, Jake McCabe, Zachary Bogosian, Marco Scandella, Josh Gorges, Nathan Beaulieu, Viktor Antipin, Justin Falk, and Brendan Guhle.

The Sabres have renewed assistant coach Tom Ward for the 2017-18 season. Ward, 53, spent 18 seasons as the head coach of the boys prep team at Shattuck-St. Mary's high school, winning nine USA Hockey National Championships and finishing as runner-up twice.

Shattuck-St. Mary's is internationally known for grooming more NHL talent than any other high school hockey program.
