I told you earlier this week that The Sabres would be once again hosting the Prospects Challenge.

The Buffalo Sabres confirmed the new that the Prospects Challenge from September 8 to 11.

I look forward to watching first overall pick Nico Hischier do his thing live in person in his return to Buffalo. Hischier attended the NHL Combine in Buffalo in early June.

Buffalo's eighth overall pick Casey Mittelstadt will want to defend his new home ice against Hischier and all challengers.

Sabres GM Jason Botterill has invited his former employer the Pittsburgh Penguins to attend this unique hockey party. The Pens have won the past two Stanley Cup championships and are the model NHL franchise right now.

The Boston Bruins and New Jersey Devils will be joined by the Pittsburgh Penguins to compete with the Sabres in the round-robin challenge featuring prospects from each team. The participating teams will each play three games during the course of the event, which will be held entirely at HarborCenter.

The game schedule for the Prospects Challenge is as follows:

Friday, 9/8

Pittsburgh vs. Boston, 3:30 p.m.
Buffalo vs. New Jersey, 7 p.m.

Saturday, 9/9

New Jersey vs. Pittsburgh, 3:30 p.m.
Buffalo vs. Boston, 7 p.m.

Monday, 9/11

Boston vs. New Jersey, 12 p.m.
Buffalo vs. Pittsburgh, 7 p.m.

According to Bloomberg, Chuck Greenberg has signed a letter of intent to purchase the NHL Carolina Hurricanes for $500 million dollars U.S.

A half a billion dollars for the lowly Carolina Hurricanes?!!

Don't hate the player, hate the game.

The Vegas Knights set the all time high ante at $500 million as the new expansion franchise buy-in.

Gary Bettman represents 31 owners who are interested in pumping up the values of their own respective franchises.

Greenberg is the former part-owner and CEO of the Texas Rangers of Major League Baseball.

According to the report, Greenberg has no interest in moving the Hurricanes out of the Research Triangle in the middle of Tobacco Road.

The Greenberg offer comes as no surprise as Canes owner Peter Karmanos said six months ago that he was willing to sell the entire Carolina Hurricanes franchise. Karmanos also said he was seeking investors in his NHL franchise. No need for Karmanos to hang a shingle on the door to recruit investors when Greenberg can be his Daddy Warbucks.

Greenberg Sports Group is the owner of the State College Spikes, Myrtle Beach Pelicans and Frisco RoughRiders of Minor League Baseball

Greenberg once owned a share of the MLB Texas Rangers along with Hall of Fame pitcher Nolan Ryan from 2010-2011. Coincidentally, Greenberg was an attorney on the acquisition team of the Pittsburgh Penguins by Ron Burkle and Mario Lemieux. Under Burke and Lemieux, the Pens have won three Stanley Cups since 2009. Greenberg appears to have an appetite for Lord Stanley's mug.

This afternoon, the Hurricanes released a statement on the Greenberg $500M offer:

Since an offer has been made to purchase the team, Mr. Karmanos intends to evaluate that offer and also will continue to evaluate his other options, including retaining his ownership of the team.

The Canes won the Cup in 2006, however, have been a middling to lower echelon club since then. They are no doubt an improving club. The Canes will challenge for an Eastern Conference playoff berth this season.

More to come.....
