Vancouver Canucks GM Jim Benning doesn't know where his team contracted the mumps virus, he just knows that several of his players have tested positive for the virus.

Did the Canucks contract the mumps on their recent Eastern roadie?

Nobody knows for sure.

Defenseman Troy Stecher is confirmed to have the mumps at this time. Other players have it as well.

Chris Tanev, Nikita Tryamkin, Mike Chaput and Markus Granlund have each presented symptoms. Other Canucks players are suspected of having symptoms. Only time will tell how many Canucks players and coaches will fall prey to this nasty virrus.

Mumps is a virus that causes swollen and tender glands, particularly the salivary gland. It also causes flu-like symptoms such as fever and body aches. Mumps is spread through respiratory droplets of saliva and mucus from the nose, mouth and throat and can be present in a person for up to two weeks before symptoms arise.

Benning has called up forward Alexandre Grenier and defenseman Evan McEneny from AHL Utica for Saturday's game with San Jose.

Will this mumps virus have a direct effect on the March 1 NHL trade deadline and any deals the Canucks may be contemplating making? It most certainly can have an impact. What if pending UFAs Ryan Miller and Alex Burrows are supposed to be trade on Wednesday but are suffering from mumps symptoms? Does Benning do the deals anyway with say Anaheim and Montreal, respectively? What happens if Burrows or Ryan Miller are traded and they have the mumps? Will their new teams keep them quarantined until such time that they are non-symptomatic?

P.S., and oh by the way....

Jake Virtanen wasn't even a consideration to be called up to Vancouver to replace mumps-stricken forwards.

I'll be willing to bet that Virtanen is going to be traded on March 1.
