The last time an NHL rookie scored two goals in his first NHL game was Alexander Ovechkin in his rookie year. Ovechkin potted two goals in the second period of hs NHL debut.

Here's a list of 1st Overall Picks To Score in their NHL Debut Since 1991:

Austin Matthews
Ryan Nugent-Hopkins
John Tavares
Alex Ovechkin
Rick Nash
Eric Lindros

Move over, Ovi.

The last time an NHL rookie scored a hat trick in his NHL debut was NY Rangers center Derek Stepan.

Step aside, Derek.

Auston Matthews is the new record holder!

Matthews scored his first two NHL goals on his first two NHL shots on goal.

How apropos.

Mathews, the first overall pick in the 2016 NHL Draft scores the first goal of the 2016-17 season.

I love a feel good story in hockey.

Eight minutes into his NHL debut, Matthews potted his first goal was a power move to the low post where he dug in and buried a pass for his first NHL goal.

His second goal was a grotesque display of neutral zone defense that saw Matthews undress and embarrass five, count 'em five NHL veterans, including All Star, Captain Erik Karlsson.

Unreal.

Then, on his third shot of the game came Matthews' third NHL goal.

All due respect to Matthews, but, where the hell is the Ottawa defense? Where is the back pressure by the Sens forwards? Would it kill Craig Anderson to make a save on Matthews on his third shot attempt? If I'm Sens head coach Guy Boucher, I'm bag skating my team Thursday morning for their slumber party effort against Matthews, Marner and the Leafs.

Matthews scored three goals in the first 21:25 of his first NHL game.

Matthews is the first Maple Leafs rookie to score a hat trick since Nik Antropov (December 20, 1999 vs. Florida), just the 3rd since 1983-84.

But wait... there's more!

Matthews buries Willie Nylander's pass four his fourth goal of the night. Matthews is now the only player in NHL history to score four goals in his NHL debut.

Leafs fans finally have something to believe in after years of futility and heartache.

I have always said that the NHL is a better place when the Toronto Maple Leafs are a respecteable opponent.

Hey, Shanny. Tanks for the memories.
