First ballot Hall Of Famers know what plays to make when the stakes are at their highest.
Friday night, Nick Lidstrom served notice to the Anaheim Ducks and the rest of the sporting world, that he and his Winged Wheels will not back down from the hanky panky of Playoff hockey. You wanna play, you gotta pay. Its almost as if Lidstromhad channelled the spirit of Stevie Y on this dandy:
Lidstrom scored the game winner with 49 ticks left on the regulation clock, in a game that resembled a WWE Wrestlemania PPV event on ice. Lidstrom's second goal of Game 1 has more value than just a game winner. Don't get me wrong. GWGs are the hallmark of great players in the quest for Lord Stanley's Mug. The great players want the puck on their stick in the dying seconds of close games. Thats what makes guys like Lidstrom great. They eat the pressure like peanute M & Ms and they have the uncanny ability to seize the big moment- they don't hide from it. What Lidstrom did was akin to him grabbing the collective Ducks squad by their throat feathers and telling them, "you wanna play goon hockey, go ahead. Pick your poison".
The Wings are no strangers to the Ducks' street brawl -style. This time Lidstrom was ready for them.
This one was chock full of "Your Mama " bombs, facewashes, jabs, jeers, sneers, and goalie collisions. Both teams participated in the festivities.
Ducks energy guy, Mike Brown Ducks Jersey in the HockeyBuzz Store' href='http://shop.hockeybuzz.com/anaheim-ducks.php'>Mike Brown, dropped Jiri Hudler (see below) with an expolosive shoulder that was clearly aimed at the Detroit forwards head. No question about it. Debate it all you want. It is what it is: a dome shot that could have, and should have been avoided. There's no place headshots in the NHL. In my opinion, it was an intentional head hit and an attempt to injure his opponent. How many times this season do we have to hear Paul Kelly and the NHLPA implore its member players to have respect for one another on the ice? What part of this don't players like Mike Brown Ducks Jersey in the HockeyBuzz Store' href='http://shop.hockeybuzz.com/anaheim-ducks.php'>Mike Brown get?
The Ducks tugged on Superman's cape.
Hudler moved the puck to the winger and was clearly in a prone position- vulnerable to Brown high elbow. Brown was DQ'd from the game, given a major penalty. Shower up and get ready for your phone conference with Colin Campbell.
"You have to have respect for the players," Wings star Henrik Zetterberg said. "That's dangerous. I think that hit was intentional. ... He put his elbow in Hud's head. ... It was a dirty hit."
Thats Anaheim for you. They look to intimidate with their antics and after whistle mosh pits. The Wings were seen buzzing Hiller's blue ice in Game 1. They know to rile up an opponent as well.
"Obviously, it's a hit on the head. I don't want to be out of line, but I hope (the League) will get a look at it and do the right thing", Hudler commented after the game.
Brown defended his actions after the game. "..It was just a clean hit. I wasn't meaning to do any harm or anything. I was just playing physical. He got cut from his visor."
When it works, Randy Caryle looks like a genious. When it fails, as it did Friday night, the Ducks are made to pay for their extra cirricular activities. Detroit capitalized on the five minute PP that they were awrded as a result of Brown's shenanigans. Franzen dotted the "i" and crossed the "t". Thats what the Wings do. They make you commit stupid penalties and then they bury you with their man-up units.
In the end, the jam and passion of Perry-Getzlaff-Ryan is lost in the aftermath of Brown's ill-timed major penalty.
