I love the Zack Kassian pick more today than I did Friday night. And, I REALLY loved the idea of picking the pugilistic Peterborough Pete leading up to the draft in Montreal!
Zack Kassian will NOT be winning a Lady Byng Trophy any time soon. He's a fighhter, not a lover. He's not Pierre Turgeon, Alexander Mogilny, or Max Afinogenov. He uses every morsel of his ability, then, works his tail off. He's an honest player. No short cuts or sidebar issues. He uses his size and mean streak to his advantage, unlike Al Kotalik and Jiri Novotny. Kassian is every bit the competitor that the Sabres fans fell in love with in the person of Mike Hartman, Kevin Maguire, Brad May, Bob Boughner, Matt Barnaby, and Rob Ray. Kassian is all about the five knuckle justice-- thats how he was born and bred. He's a warrior who puts his team above all else. When he's on the ice, the other team is looking out of their ear hole because they know he's coming after the puck with wreckless abandon. Kassian is Pat Kaleta with 20-25 goals in his Vapor. Gordy Howe Hat Tricks are hard to achieve in today's NHL. Dare I say, say fans will be witnessing many such accomplishments in years to come.
Drafting Kassian 13th overall was the right think to do. Its an investment in the future. He'll likely be sentt back to the Petes for the upcoming season, however, that die has not been cast yet. We'lll get our first look at Kassian at Sabres Rookie Developmental campa at Niagara University July 6-11.He'll be given the Doug Mckenney offseason program and the rest is up to him. He'll come to camp in September looking to punch his ticket to Portland. Darcy and the scouts should be commended for depositing Kassian in their bank account.
He'll pay big dividends for the Blue and Gold.

Look for darcy to make an early deal to get a pick in today's second round. Buffalo traded their second rounder to San Jose last Summer for Captain Rivet.
I'm told that Buffalo will be looking for a centreman with size and skill, as well as a defensive Dman.
